Get your binoculars out because the birds are migrating back to Maine!

It is this time of year we celebrate the arrival of our favorite Baltimore Oriole and Ruby-throated Hummingbird pairs. Although warblers do not visit our feeders, they are arriving to eat lots and lots of bugs.  Often a bit of yellow is what catches your eye, as was the case the other day when a friend asked, “What bird has yellow under its wings with black and white markings on its head?”

“That would be a male Yellow-rumped or Myrtle Warbler.”

I use my ears as well and am likely to notice the insistent “Teacher, teacher, teacher!” of the Ovenbird, or the persistent squeaky wheel of the Black-and-white Warbler. The Chestnut-sided Warbler is a smart looking bird. He has chestnut sides with a bright yellow cap on his head, and speaks with a distinctive accent when he says: “Pleased, pleased, pleased to meet you!”

And I will be pleased if you see a few warblers.
